We are glad to see Torrey (a environmental science major) riding for arguably the most environmentally friendly snowboard company in the industry. Hats off to Niche for not giving into the economic pressures of cheap materials / designs that most other companies use.

Be Safe Out There

It's a well know fact that here at Animal Farm, we care about the safety and well being of all boarders. With the Protective League, we try to promote safety, fun and defying the dangers inherent in our sport. One of those dangers, however, can barely be mitigated by just wearing a helmet. I am referring to avalanches.

Rich and I found ourselves just outside ski area boundaries yesterday, and ended up setting off a very sizable avalanche. It was terrifying. Rich noticed some signs of danger, and recomended that I pull out of a gully into a safe zone after dropping a cliff. I did as he suggested, and just as I reached the ridge, the entire gully slid, and fractured over 100' all the way clear over to another ridge. The slide gained momentum, traveled through and number of trees and off some cliffs, and continued all the way down to the bottom of the zone.

We were both well aware that the avy conditions were poor, but with the limited coverage we did not imagine we would find ourselves in any avalanche prone terrain. Because of this, neither of us were carrying our beacons. Now for the take home message. Always be mindful of your surroundings, have the proper safety equipment, have a buddy, and listen to the signs. We were lucky that no one was taken for a ride, but were certainly shaken by the ordeal. We both left with a greater respect for the mountains, whether it be miles in the backcountry, or just out of bounds. Stay safe, stay alive.

Josh and I spent a sunny Saturday riding the rope at Raging Buffalo (Thank you Connor and Kent for the help).

With both a slalom and a slopestyle contest going on, the left rope was the only one open.
With temperatures in the mid 40's and the good ole midwestern rays the features softened up right nice.

We snapped a few photos to document the experience.

A great place, and a most wonderful day turning, airing, grinding, and just plain wholesome snowboarding.
Though I wish we had stayed for the slalom race...

Snowboarding is an amazing thing. The passion we feel for the sport is unparalleled. The combination of adrenaline, speed, air, and personal accomplishment can be nothing short of intoxicating. Sometimes, that feeling can bring us to places where we think we can do anything. Unfortunately, that feeling will disappear in an instant when reality comes crashing back into your sphere of consciousness. Here is a little reminder that we are human, and most of us, even more mundane.

Lately we've had very little snow in Utah. I feel like I'm back east. Instead of complaining, I will say it's been nostalgic. I say that in a good way. Tonight has been no different as I sit here on a lift at Park City. It's 25F and life is good.

Pre-Season

Pre-season has come and gone. Well, it seems that it hasn't really gone due to the fact that the snow has yet to start falling in Utah. The bone zone again was the center of pre-season activity. With countless man hours going into new wood obstacles, and even support from lucrative sponsors contributing legit new rails, the zone has transformed into a full blown board park. As the snow began to fall in October, the work of these dedicated boarders came to fruition and the stoke was thicker than the smog that now plagues us in the valley. Above are some pictures of pre-season happenings in the Wasatch.

It's still good in Utah folks

Well I had the privilege of heading into the back country today with some stand up fellows. Noah Lohr, Jason Heckle and Tucker Andrews joined me on a little excursion behind Brighton. We hiked up to the top of Wolverine, then headed over to a nearby ridge where we planned to drop a cornice into a nice steep slope. On the way to said cornice, a touring skier tapped it with his pole, it broke, and set off a sizable avalanche into the slope below. We were lucky that we hadn't been the cause of this break. We rode down a safer zone, and built a really nice jump on which every rider got at least one shot. Here are some photos from the journey. Winter's not yet over...

Hey Dudes, probably pretty much only Animal Farmers and friends read this, but I thought I should post it. I just got back from the best week riding in Utah. So much snow, fun, and friends, made for an amazing vacation, and made me miss the place so much. Even though we are pretty careful out there, we aren't as careful as we should be. This video on the weather channel seriously scares the shit out of me. Wear beacons, always have your cell phones on you, and ride with friends, because this could totally happen and I'd never want to hear about this happening to anyone I know. BEN LITTLER!, buy a beacon!

Animal Farm hits the range

Recently I found myself in Salt Lake City at the same time as Noah Hausknecht, Josh(the Punisher) Poehlein and Chris Lambert. When we weren't snowboarding in top notch conditions we entertained ourselves with a slew of notable activities Salt Lake had to offer. We went to "Get Some, Guns and Ammo", the people were wild, the guns..insane and the security of the whole operation was extremely lax.

Midwest Mission

I took a week off of work to do a little Midwest road trip. First stop was Tyrol Basin, which may have the cheapest lift ticket in the country. $12 for a ticket that lasts from 10 AM to 9 PM. I didn't stay nearly that long, but had fun riding a lift for the first time this year. (click the pictures for bigger versions)

I left Tyrol for Minneapolis. This Yak is living the high life:

Drove through the town of "Black Earth." I was hoping for something a bit more metal.

Then I found Rich's Eatery and car wash, where you drink liquor and then I guess the car wash is for getting clean after you get filthy.

There's a lot of snow in Minneapolis. My friend Eric feeding the meter.

The next shred stop was Hyland Hills. I'm going to go ahead and say this is one of, if not the best park I have ever ridden. The rope tows probably go fast enough to wakeboard behind, and everything is made absolutely perfect.

I broke out the new Protective League sticker:

After riding for what seemed like hours I went inside to get a drink and some fries. I realized it had only been 50 minutes!

As I was sitting there, in walked Joe Mertes, an old buddy who worked at High Cascade while I worked there. With renewed vigor I set out for the rest of the day.

Happenings.

It's been fun in Salt Lake/Wasatch Mountains lately. The holidays are over. Good times were shared with family and friends. Though the smog has been close to unbearable in the city the past week or so, the mountain air has saved my sanity as well as my lungs and upper respiratory system.

Torrey, Ben Littler and I took some days and explored the Wasatch, well Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon on foot. A few hikes out of Brighton, up Grizzly Gulch and a hike into Days Fork off Big Cottonwood Canyon. Not much was documented unfortunately, but a time shared with friends in the sidecountry and backcountry is hard to beat.
I recently completed a splitboard, and I'm excited to get out and explore with a bit more ease, what we've only been able to look at from a far. Here's a picture of my work, and also a gem (above) on top of Millicent peak, right outside of Brighton Resort.

First Day at Raging Buffalo!

Today was my first day riding at the glorious Raging Buffalo. I woke up to find this on my front porch, a good sign I thought:

After a mellow drive I showed up in the parking lot:

I picked up my season pass, and complimentary hat that smells like patchouli. I've been wearing it since I left.

No pics from the hill though. I don't like to be bogged down by cameras in my pockets. Although you can imagine a sled hill with sketchy boxes and rails on it, and you get the general idea. Add in a bunch of people eating it on the rope tow, and a bunch of kids that are better at rails than I am and that's about it. After my forearms and fingers gave out (holding onto a rope tow for 50 runs is really difficult) I headed home, but not before a quick stop for some much needed sustenance.

I was in the lift line at 8:45am. The photos explain the morning quite well. But I will say this, I had a smile on my face each run and it sure made my day. And tomorrow another wave of snow is predicted!

Good Start

The 2010/11 season is getting off to an amazing start. With a good deal of snow this week and a lot of hard work by the dudes at the bone zone and ramblin's spot there is plently of wood and metal to keep you entertained until the lifts spin. On Wednesday a good crew of boarders headed up for the annual pre season hike of Alta. With snow on the ground in the city we felt our chances of finding some powder were pretty good. We were pretty right. Check out what we found in Utah in October.

Our house went up into the mountains today to get a little taste of winter. It was snowing pretty hard and it really felt like the season is starting up there. We went to Rambler's super secret ultra exclusive you better be friends with him if you want to hit his spot and tried to snowboard. It was a good time for all.

Western New York Summer

Even though most us spent the summer on Hood, and the rest of us spent it in Salt Lake, it was interesting to see what was going on back in WNY. A little over a year ago, a Dry Slope mini mountain was created supplying local riders with year long bristle turns and a little bit of summer slush. Our fearless leader, founder, and team manager of Animal Farm Rich Wheeler just hit a little bump in the road. Took a little trip down to Southern Utah to see Bryce and Zion. Did some driving, did some hiking, did some whiskey drinking, did some camping then ended with some hot springing.

If this isn't reason enough to go to Zion then, well, I guess you just suck and should go back to watching T.V.

I've known Rich since I was born, reason being, he is my cousin. I know him well, and I'm happy to say he is one of my very best friends. Rich is a wonderfully caring and outstanding human being. He is always looking out for the ones he cares about, and isn't hesitant to surprise them when they least expect it; putting some joy in their life. He knows how to have a great time in whatever it is he's doing.
Rich is always on the look out for a deal, a trait I think comes from our grandfather. When you have a business question or you'd like advise on running or starting up a little business venture, Rich is the guy to talk to. He knows his stuff. He is the guy be behind the scenes, and also the TM at Animal Farm, I know I wouldn't want to see anyone other than him in that position. Well it's your day Rich, I just wanted to say I love you, and I know I speak for all at the Farm here as well when I say, thank you for all your kind gestures and support always! Happy Birthday Rich!!

It's Ben's Birthday today! Being my best friend, and having grown up with him I can say I know him quite well. He is one of the most caring and compassionate people I know. If you see him and he doesn't have a smile on his face or isn't enjoying himself consider yourself lucky because this is an extremely rare occurrence. To say the least the kid is one of the happiest people I have ever been around. He's able to make life meaningful, but not serious, making it a pleasure to be around him. On top of that he is a respectful gentleman.
Ben has done much and lived in many places. He made it through a year in Hollywood, CA at film school, he's traveled back and forth across our fine country numerous times; from Utah, to Washington, and up and down the pacific coast. He has made many great videos and is extremely talented with his words. I am a lucky soul to have been exposed to some of his greatness. Ben puts himself in positions to make his life an adventure. Living meagerly, and enjoying everyday he has is one of the many things I love about Ben! Having lived with him for 3 years now, I can say with a passion, I love you Ben, we all do here at the Farm! Happy Birthday my friend!!

One Week Left.

One week left here in Utah. One week for lift serviced riding at Brighton that is. There is still plenty of snow up in the mountains, and being from the east coast where you ride until you have to pond skim, and grass ride to the lifts, it seems strange that they are closing with this much snow. It snowed 97 inches last week!

It's been a great season and I want to thank Ben, Ben, Rich, Sean, Mark, and Torrey for keeping me excited and motivated to keep going up even when the conditions weren't so great, and for waking me up when they were.

Thanks to the Dinobots kids too for being so down to ride with anyone and have fun on anything no matter what.

Thanks to the Variety Pack dudes for doing the same, and also for making a video of death defying feats that I can live vicariously through.

I hope to see all of you fools up at Brighton this week gettin loose!

On another note I also would like to suggest a meeting of all the crews, friends, buddies, and whoever else wants to come up to an undisclosed location for a post-season rhythm section extravaganza! Date to be determined, but a few weeks sounds about right. Just think what 20-30 people with shovels, determination, creativity, and a little bit of PBR in 'em could do in a few day's worth of work up in the leftover snow!
